A Legacy That Lives On

Dr. D. I. Wilkinson was more than a co-founder of Pecan Creek Winery—he was a dear friend whose vision, generosity, and adventurous spirit helped turn a shared passion for winemaking into the winery we know today.

I first met D.I. when the search committee for Grace Episcopal Church, Muskogee traveled to Washington, D.C. to find the next priest for the parish. We became friends right away with common interests in church, hunting, fishing, medicine, and wine. After a few years of giving away small batch wine made from West Coast grapes, D.I. told me that “We need to do something with this [wine]” and Pecan Creek Winery was born. D.I. loved getting out in the vineyard early in the mornings during the growing season. There is a rhythm and a spiritual awakening of pruning grapes in the morning dew. He loved to fish and hunt. We had many adventures in Oklahoma and in his native Texas. I have never seen anyone drive a pickup over terrain that most folks wouldn’t consider, even with a seasoned horse. His zest for life, his giving to the church, and his pride in fifty years of medical practice as a pediatrician were only outdone by his disarming smile and fellowship with friends and family. We will miss him. His life and legacy make the world a better place.

Whether tending the vineyard in the quiet morning dew, sharing stories with friends, or caring for generations of children during his many years as a pediatrician, D.I. lived with compassion, humility, and joy.

His vision helped plant the roots of this winery. His friendship shaped our journey. His spirit remains woven into every vine, every vintage, and every gathering around our table.

Though he is deeply missed, his legacy continues to grow through the place he helped inspire and the people who continue his dream.
